Sevier County School Zoning
With some of the nation’s best schools right here in the Gatlinburg area, it is important to know Sevier County’s policy when it comes to designated school zones. While each school does have zones within which school bus service is provided for students, there is an excellent policy that allows all Sevier County families to choose which school in the county their children will attend, regardless of where within the county they live.
This open enrollment is particularly important when you consider the fact that the highest scoring schools within the county (Pi Beta Phi Elementary and Gatlinburg Pittman High School) are both in one of the areas of the county with the smallest number of permanent residents (Gatlinburg). Open enrollment forces Sevier County schools to “compete” with each other for students and all families regardless of where they live can benefit from our excellent schools here in the south end of the county.
Of courses, there are limits. To attend any Sevier County school a student must be a resident of the county. Once enrolled, a student cannot transfer from one school within the county to another unless they have moved their residence or can show a particular reason why a change in the school they attend is necessary. This eliminates constant back and forth transferring which benefits nobody. Also, if a student attends a school other than the one their residence indicates they would normally attend the student’s family is responsible for all transportation as bus service is not available outside of the school’s natural zone.
